Our speaker this month is John Schmidtberger. John is a painter, gallerist and cartoonist from Upper Black Eddy, PA. He paints from direct observation, without the use of photographs and with little or no retouching. He describes his work as “Poetic Realism.” His paintings are known for their strong sense of light, decisive brushwork, and vivid palette. Some major influences are: Fairfield Porter, Edward Hopper, Matisse, Alice Neel and Marsden Hartley.
John grew up in Hackettstown, NJ and attended Phillips Exeter Academy on a scholarship. At the University of Pennsylvania, he studied painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking with Neil Welliver (1929-2005), Robert Engman (1927-2018), Hitoshi Nakazato (1936-2010) earning a BFA in 1984 and an MFA in 1987.
John’s paintings have been exhibited at the James A. Michener Museum, Doylestown, PA; the Prince Street Gallery, NY; Jeffrey Leder Gallery, NY; Elan Fine Arts, Rockland, ME; Littlefield Gallery, Winter Harbor, ME; Camden Falls Gallery, Camden, ME; The Quiet Life Gallery, Lambertville, NJ and many others. His work has been reviewed in the New York Times and has appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine (cover) and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine.
