Was Botticelli your hero? Learn to paint like the old masters and explore the media of Egg Tempera. This technique has been used for millennia in the creation of some of the world’s most famous artwork, from Botticelli in the 15th century to Marc Chagall and Andrew Wyeth in the 20th. Egg tempera as a medium is credited with luminosity of color, the ability to render fine detail along with archival quality, all in a solvent-free environment. Students of this class will be given a short history of egg tempera and will learn about modern artists using this medium.
We will make the egg emulsion, transfer the drawing to a board (8 x 10 provided), learn about the egg to pigment ratio and setting up the palette, and make a base layer of egg tempera on the board. Egg tempera is a quick drying medium and the painting is done in many, many layers. During the course students will develop their painting, learn how to fix problems, and make amendments. Students will be able to finish their painting and put in final details at the end of the course. Additional boards will be available should a student want to begin a new painting.
Students will be provided with the boards, pigments, bottles with droppers for the egg and a few other supplies for an additional cost of $25. A list of items that the students should bring will be provided after registration.
Cost: $80 plus $25 material fee, totalling $105.
